11 Tips for Do-It-Yourself HVAC Maintenance

Thermostat

So, the first question to answer is, “Why is a heating and air conditioning company going to tell me how to do basic maintenance on my furnace?” Well, the truth of the matter is, if you find this information valuable and beneficial, then when the problem arises above your ability, you might just let us take over. Reliable Comfort stands ready to serve at a moments notice.

Second reason to do furnace maintenance yourself – the bottom line is, the only reason to perform your own maintenance is to save money on what would be check-up costs.

That being said, here are 11 points you can use to look-over your soon to be needed companion:

  1. Inspect your thermostat.
    • Check for level, accuracy and operation.
  2. Inspect your venting system.
    • Check for corrosion, loose connections or any suspicious looking or smelling segments.
  3. Change your air filter!
    • Replace or clean your filter(s) to ensure consistent, efficient airflow.
  4. Inspect your blower motor and wheel.
    • Check for cleanliness; a dirty blower or wheel can greatly reduce airflow.
  5. Pull and clean your burners.
    • Ensure that you have clean orifices and cross lighters.
  6. Visually inspect the heat exchanger.
    • Look for any defects or changes in the metal.
  7. Vacuum debris out of furnace.
    • It just makes it look like you did more and reduces dirt build up.
  8. Cycle your heat.
    • Monitor for proper sequence.
  9. Monitor the flame.
    • Monitor flame pattern for smooth, upright consistent flame behavior. Any fluctuation in flame indicates a need for further testing.
  10. Check the temperature rise.
    • Measure the difference between entering air and leaving air. Proper range can be found on the furnace rating plate.
  11. Inspect for any unusual behavior.
    • Ensure there is no excess heat, water or unusual noises present during operation.

This list will get you a basic look into the function of your furnace this fall. You might need to have a basic mechanical understanding to tackle this whole list, but we are always on standby for you if you need any help along the way.

If any of the items in this list fail your approval, feel free to contact Reliable Comfort Heating and Air Conditioning. We are here to serve you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At Reliable Comfort, “We won’t sleep till you have heat.”
